b. Devonte Hynes, Houston, Texas, USA. Formerly a member of the inelegantly named UK dance punk band Test Icicles, multi-instrumentalist Hynes embarked on a markedly different musical path for the solo project Lightspeed Champion. Conceived following the dissolution of Test Icicles at the start of 2006, Hynes spent the rest of that year toying with various side projects, including the glam metal/rap unit NLS Crew and the short-lived Naked Babes. He also collaborated with members of Whirlwind Heat on the Lightspeed Heat EP. His 2008 debut as Lightspeed Champion, Falling Off The Lavender Bridge, was recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, with members of Bright Eyes, Cursive and the Faint. The album married lush indie pop and rootsy country rock to notable effect, although Hynes' clumpy lyricism was an unfortunate hangover from his Test Icicles days. The prolific Hynes has also released a number of bootleg sessions via his own MySpace website.
