Reverend And The Makers' Jon McClure to quit music?

McClure says his next album will be his last

Reverend And The Makers' Jon McClure has declared that he will quit the music industry after the release of his next album.

McClure is set to release his second album, 'A French Kiss In The Chaos', in early 2009.

The Sheffield musician said that his disappointment with current attitudes in the music industry and press had prompted his decision.

"I played a festival recently – I put up a peace sign and got the crowd to put up a peace sign," he told BBC Radio Ulster's Across The Line. "It was written in the music press [in NME] that my asking people to put up a peace sign was a crassism.

"Now if it's a crassism to ask people to put up a peace sign at a time when we're at war in two countries, we're shafted. And therefore I'm going to retire from the music industry in January because I'm disgusted by it. I don't want nothing to do with it no more.

"I'm going to retire from the music industry because it's run by rich white men who are very conservative and have been around too long. They don't wanna hear anybody with anything truly rebellious to say and that's why British indie music has stalled for the last ten years.

"I got herded into that pop game by the management I had at the time. Now I'm gonna go to Venezuela and go on [Hugo] Chavez's [Venezuela President] TV show and I'm gonna go to Lebanon.

"I would never have been allowed to do that before, I would never have been allowed to say anything of a political nature because it didn't square with their idea of what a pop artist is.

"But in reality, you only get two albums anyway before the industry replaces you, so on this album I might as well do what I want to do and go out telling the truth."

Fresh to hear. I think they're brilliant song writers, the lyrics are brilliant.

Good, im not a fan anyway, just another throw away group. If he was in it for the music and not the money he would go it alone like alot of other bands are doing these days like the Futureheads.

Well, my comment is a predictable one, but honestly: Who cares? Maybe if he'd written at least one decent tune, we'd be missing him...+ Who really believes he's gonna "retire" anyway? He's gonna flog it as long as he can.

You go John Lennon... I mean Bono, no sorry... you go the friend of the lead singer from the Arctic Monkeys. Seriously not that I care but if you can't put up with something written in NME you have no chance. I mean they call Oasis to must overrated, unimportant band of all time and then the next week they'll have them on the front cover in a bid to shift a few copies.

So long and thanks for all the memories. I will always remember you for what you were. An NME hyped, no-talent, arsewipe. I would like to see you on your way, by offering you a reverse peace sign. Twat.

Maybe if the NME describes Mark Ronson as crass he'll fuck off as well.

from the start, i always knew he didn't wanna actually make music, he just used it as a way to get a leg up to do something else, oh well, at least we don't have to listen to that shit anymore

Decent bloke, but, the real reason is the lack of money to be made out of music at the moment. Still, he can continue to write lyrics for Mr Turner

I don't get it. Why's this bloke so hated? What exactly has he done other than have an opinion and the guts to let people know what he thinks? Love or loath his music you have to admire a man who is not afraid to say what he thinks and the conviction to stand by his views.

I expect to see a 2-page spread in next weeks NME thanking and honouring whoever described him as crass.Anyone who can end Reverend And The Makers' deserves recognition.

Firstly, well done NME for fianlly reporting on this, its been known for a while. And secondly, its scarey, NME. that you see asking for peace as crass, maybe you were shocked that a band actually had a something important to say. They are a great band. They are saying something real in a time when people are expected to keep their mouths shut. I will miss then loads. Jons the only front man who will play to fans for free after gigs and make sure he meets and talks to his fans - im sure you wont get that on the new oasis tour.

I'm no fan of Jon McClure (though he's always come across as a good bloke in interviews), but it does strike me as a sad indictment of the NME that it'll sneer at this guy for giving it the peace sign, and yet celebrate Pete Doherty. I appreciate the NME wants to be seen as a bit 'edgy'. But what's braver - being passionate about a message of peace in an age of apathy... or just get battered off your arse?

Why even release your next album then. Just keep it to yourself. That'll show them.... lol

yes please keep the second album to yourself. what a shower of over rated tosh. He kicked off when his 1st album that 'had something to say' (ahem) wasnt nominated for any awards whatsoever and now is using the excuse that he is disgusted with the music industry as a way out.. For someone who has a lot to say, he should just grow a pair and admit his songs are rubbish his band is terrible and he always knew it'd only be 5 minutes of (brief) fame... heavyweight was still a cracking single though!
