Razorlight

Slipway Fires

Say what you like about Johnny Borrell, but Christ, if he isn’t one hell of a lot more fascinating than any other pop buffoon out there right now. More than one person I know who has interviewed him describes the experience of looking into his eyes as being akin to staring into Death Of A Salesman anti-hero Willy Loman’s. And that feels about right – empty, yet full of ambition and a lust for success that borders on dementia. But post-‘America’, post-Razorlight using every careerist trick in the book to become an actual big band, he’s not even annoying or hateable anymore. He’s just weird, utterly hilarious and quite disturbing.

Consider the pearl necklaces he’s been sporting in promo shots recently. Pearl friggin’ necklaces! Consider lead single ‘Wire To Wire’: all its preposterous, empty power-ballad sentiment, its video’s striking resemblance to David Brent’s ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ clip. Bonkers. And consider so, so many of the lyrics on the third Razorlight album. Gone are the laughably literal likes of “I met a girl/She asked me my name/I told her what it was” (from ‘Somewhere Else’) and “I go out somewhere/Then I come home again” (‘America’) replaced by words that are ludicrous in a totally different way. “I’ve been crucified just for telling my story!” he wails on ‘Hostage Of Love’. “These middle class kids are so strange!” he continues on ‘Tabloid Lover’. And the best one of all from ‘North London Trash’: “I’ve got a hot-bodied girlfriend, who makes the cameras flash!” All delivered with trademark, clunking over-sincerity and absolutely zero subtlety. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. Really, it’s hard to know what to say.

All of these lunatic ramblings, of course, distract from what’s going on musically. A good thing, in many ways, as ‘Slipway Fires’ reveals Razorlight once more as just a boringly competent indie band masquerading as, at best, Fleetwood Mac and, at worst, Whitesnake. All of their arrangements, their histrionics are a long, long way from matching their singer’s stupidity. The Stars In Their Eyes’ U2 guitar intro of ‘Burberry Blue Eyes’, for example, falls horribly flat; ‘You And The Rest’ and ‘60 Thompson’ are just drab; and listening to the overblown, piano-led likes of ‘Blood For Wild Blood’ and closer ‘The House’ – once you get over the initial shock of the words – evokes the same feeling that watching the second stage of The X Factor does (you know, the bit where they whittle down the kind of OK people into the OK people). It’s here that Borrell is at his most ridiculous (and thus most entertaining), but the musicians behind him simply can’t keep up. Or don’t have the guts to point out to him how silly he may be appearing.

In simple terms, then, the third Razorlight album is utter, utter cobblers. This was expected, and will come as a surprise to no-one. It’s just a shame, for those of us who long ago stopped being irritated by Johnny Borrell and learned to laugh at his strange, strange ways, that it hasn’t gone far enough. It’s quite funny, sure, but not that funny. Mainly, it just sounds like another biggish, mainstream indie band trying to sound like the proper grown up stadium bands. It will probably sell shitloads, what with that similarly unintentionally hilarious Nickelback single doing so well this year. That’s where Razorlight are now. The people who bought that single will love this record. Mad people. Pearl necklaces!

I've not heard it but is it really that bad 4/10? or is this another example of a journalist slating a good band because they've gone out of fashion and it's not cool to like them anymore or to make way for average boring NME hype bands like Glasvegas etc. btw I actually really liked Wire To Wire, great vocals, great lyrics but oh well its not cool to like Razorlight anymore so I guess I'll give up on them now... not

Awesome and totally expected review! If you aimed to shock- you didn't! It might get rid of the numpties who saw them at the back end of the last albs tour who didnt even know stumble and fall! All the songs I've heard so far on this alb sound good and Wire to Wire is an unexpected gem of a first single. Sounding like Fleetwood Mac or U2 isn't a crime in my book, so I'm looking forward to it.

Last week it was Snow Patrol, the week before Keane and now Razorlight. Three of Britains biggest bands, so my name is Hamish and I'll slag them off because "it's cool to hate Razorlight", Anyway I couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks, or if any members tell me that it's FACT that their shite. My Opinion and read that, My opinion, is their a bloody brilliant band with catchy tunes and their good fun, i'll be buying this on Monday. Love me, wherever you are. Lex31 is spot on!

Load of bollocks, what a surprise NME would slate Razorlight. Or The Kaiser Chiefs. Or Snow Patrol. Or any other band that has sold more than 25 records. At least it's not as pathetic as the shambles over 'Razorlight' when NME gave the album 8 out ot 10 then nominated it in the NME Awards for Worst Album..................

I saw Razorlight recently at the forum and the played a lot of their new album and i was well impressed by the new material. This is the reason I struggle to believe that this album is only a 4 out of 10, but lets be honest guys, as sounded said 'its cool to hate razorlight' just because JohnnyBorrell actually has an opinion unlike a number of these miserable indie misfits

razorlight ....zzzzzzzzzzzz - considered by the rest of the world to be some kind of joke band - actually fortunately they're not really known to the rest of the world. They never make the lineup on any southern hemisphere festivals - phew .And as for Kean and Snow Patrol, gawd they're so wet they must surely be creatures of the sea .

maybe a 6 out of 10 would be fair, this album isn't that good. It's just gotten worse and worse since their debut.

Kaiser Cheifs, Snow Patrol, Keane, and Razorlight have all copped shocking reviews for ripping albums. Get that axe swinging, some people have to go.

I'm listening to this album right now and it is great! Its razorlight! and if you like mainstream indie rock then you'll love it. I actually can't believe what I've read from this site in the last few weeks. I think its time for either real journalists or non-fascists to start writing columns on this site!

Brilliant! Genius. Let's hope with reviews like that, it's an end to the 'fashion before substance' which accounts for a lot of the tosh that's in the charts these days. Back to music school, learn some skills, then we'll listen again!

man, i made the mistake of getting their last album, so if this is anywhere near as bad then they are in big trouble. the bloke who called glasvegas boring - compared to razorlight??? youve got rocks in your head mate.

Nov 3, 2008

I agree with some of the reviews that NME cover, such as the Kaiser Chief's album and Keane's. Though Razorlights album is pretty good, worth at least 7 or 7.5 out of 10. NME need to rate albums based on the music and not the bands previous commercial success. It's funny how most of the bands who end up getting a slating in the reviews are on the front cover of the magazine every week to help shift copies.

lex31

Nov 3, 2008

Glasvegas are very overrated. in my opinion 9/10 for their album, no way! and i can bet you that in 2 years time nme will review their follow up album and give it a 5 even though its gonna sound exactly the same as their debut. NME have always hyped up bands to knock em down again. Remember when they said the twang were the new oasis???

I like razorlight and i think this is a good album not brilliant but not 4 out of 10, i also liked kaiser chiefs new record. I bet that the killers new album also gets slated by them. They dont like succesful mainstream bands however good they are.

I'll never forget when numpty Borrell likened himself to Bob Dylan. Man, did I wet myself! I like a pompous, shit talking frontman, but it'll never suit Borrell because he and Razorshite are only built for the pop charts. I can only pray this is the last of 'em because I'd sooner eat my own spleen than be subjected to their poor excuse for indie rock anymore! Urgh...

ive never been a big fan of the nme, but when it comes to reviews they mosty know what there on about. kaiser cheifs album, keane's album and razorlights album have all been a pile of shit. jokes get less funny the more you say them. and razorlights songs have been a joke for a while now.

Heard the album and what a suprise, its great so nme are wrong again. q is more a fair guide to music, nme has it in its head that oasis u2 and killers are good and other big bands are not, i have heard razorlight, oasis and killers new stuff and razorlight is way better than anything else but wouldnt for 1 minute expect nme to agree. 8/10

NME reviews are never to be taken too seriously .. they rate anything that is too mainstream crap .. The way i see it everyone has there own taste in music so listen & decide for yourself!! This is the worst album they have cut but there are still some really good tunes on it ... The house is an amazing song, powerful & well written, wire to wire is great wee number which i never expected, burberry blue eyes + tabloid eyes are good, north London trash is good ... the rest are a bit weak for me & Borrell seems like he has had his head stuck up his ass a little, i would say 6.5 or 7/10 ... A little bit too radio2 i think?!?! Razorlight were cool & charasmatic when up all night came out, good riff tunes but they have all disappeared, razorlight are definitely much more exciting band than Glasvegas who are an average band that everyone knew NME would bum up to the max, typical NME bumming up average really!

"once you get over the initial shock of the words"so it's groundbreaking to sing about your dad pissing off because he can't stand your mother but when he's dead then it's not heartfelt and thusly shitworst album review i've read in a long while.

Nov 5, 2008

I'm of the opinion that a good tune's a good tune, irregardless of which pointless dickhead wrote it. As such, doesn't anyone else think 'Stinger' is perhaps the worst song in the history of life, the universe and everything ever? When they did it on the electric proms I almost shat myself in embarassment. But then again, I shit myself all the time

I dont agree with this style of journalism , basing stuff on 'coolness' (and the cool list has no real purpose - apart from giving the people of Shoreditch a shopping list). I would prefer a proper unbiased review so i can decide whether to buy or not.I get the impression nme thinks nobody pays for the music so the review may as well have no actually journalistic value as people will see for themselves.Cheers Hamish MacBainofsuccesful bands your brilliant.

I haven't heard this record but that's an entertaining, ballsy review - the kind of thing I didn't think NME did anymore, basically. Razorlight are woeful.

They'll be around a lot longer than Crystal fucking Castles. FACT.

Soundedd

Nov 6, 2008

......And that's because Crystal Castles are fucking wank!, I mean how is it cool to be a woman that looks like Noel Fielding? Really? The Cool list, what a load of shite. I'm getting Slipway Fires for Christmas, good times!

Nov 7, 2008

I like this review. I do not agree with NME's bashing of bands once they have become big (you would all adore Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol and Razorlight if they were new bands) and having interviewed Borrell myself a few times I know this reviewer is widely exaggerating about him being so deranged - preposterous he is, yeah, but he HAS a story to tell and after all he's still just a shaken kid that wants to be loved. He's a genuinely nice guy once he no longer fears you. But unlike NME's recent slaggings of Keane and Snow Patrol, which were bland and predictable, this review has a certain angle. I haven't heard the album, so I can't say if I agree with you on the music but that's not what reading reviews is about anyway. A good review should spotlight an album from an angle you haven't perceived it from yourself yet and I for one gained entertainment and specific information about the record out of this. It is clear that this reviewer has listened to the album before the putdown (unlike, again, the Snow Patrol and Keane reviews) So thumbs up, NME, if you're going to

Soundedd

Nov 10, 2008

Haha he's interviewed Borrell, what a legend! Are you Zane Lowe or Edith Bowman or someone in disguise?

Razorlight are fucking dreadful... they badly need to fuck off and never vomit their putrid attempts at music into the world ever again.

vince_vega

Nov 10, 2008

I much prefer this type of review to all the superficial, all-praising ,hyped upcrap that you tend to get on NME and other music magazines these days. In fact, you'd struggle to find where there is actually some CRITICISM involved. Whats the point in reading them, if everyone is made out as the "new biggest band"?! Keane ARE shit, so is Snow Patrol, and so are tons of other godawful "indie" bands, which sound pretty much the same and bring nothing new to the world of music. Kudos to Hamish for going against the current, lets hope others follow his example.

Soundedd still believes in Santa. Which is a claim that carries more integrity than any Snow Patrol or Keane record.

its_rudimentary is Santa. He sneaks into peoples houses and steals their Mince Pies. Got to be more fun than listening to the new Metallica or AC/DC albums.

Nov 12, 2008

So yeah maybe the new Razorlight album is much slower than the last few albums, but i think every bad has to have a calmer more melodic album in their back catalogue. 'Wire to Wire' is another great song from the band and so is the rest of Slipway Fires. It seems Razorlight have gone into the mature state of their lives, and quite frankly, its amazing. I think four out of ten is harsh.. and i agree with other users that it should've got a least a six. Girls Aloud: manufactured band, get an 8...yet a band who got together off their own back, play their own instruments and write their own songs only get a 4? I really can't figure out the reviews section anymore. I'm all for a mixture of music styles, but this takes the mick.

JaymesBond

Nov 13, 2008

The trouble with this review is that he's jealous. All reviewers are like this when they know they cant right music they love - its called a backlash! Johnny and Razorlight will be as big as U2 - yeah this record is not good as the other. But the others were so good anyway it does not care. Wire to Wire is the biggest track of the decade - imagine it in the stadiums!!! Anyway who isnt moved by hostage of love will neve apprecitae great tunes.

daryl2008

Nov 17, 2008

id never judge an album before i listened to it regardless how much i hated the band but i thought the reviewer was being rather generous in his review. i was forced to work with this playing on the stereo the other day and being honest its one of the most hilarious pompous comedy rock albums ive ever heard. forget fleetwood mac and whitesnake this bunch of twats are closer to fucking journey. razorlight arent band anymore theyre johnny borrell and 3 other guys who are afraid too speak up lest they be sacked.it is disappointing though because there was a time when razorlight were good. its a shame they went so shite so spectacularly but thats what happens when youre fronted by an average songwriter with white jeans and a messiah complex.the album cover is shite too.

benham10

Nov 26, 2008

I am someone who can tolerate Razorlight (not twatty Borrel, mind!), Up All Night I still hold in high regards as a very good album, however I think they have just gone completely downhill, their last album distinctly below average, and this, well....shite!! Hate the single, album is boring and quite embarrasing how they try to be something they clearly aren't... Go back to the Up All Night style and the ways of Golden Touch et al, this is pure bollocks as far as I'm concerned!!

ibrahimThe

Dec 18, 2008

seems people expect so much from razorlight, i don't, this is an average album, 2nd album was their best and i don't think they'll ever top it or write a song like america again. forget borrel or great expectations, then you can enjoy the album. the houose, 60 Thompson good ballads. tabloid lover & north london trash is other songs that graze from rest. (the kooks never gonna record an album as good as selftitled, razorlight as well)

Stefano27

Dec 29, 2008

I think Razorlight are great. "Up All Night" is one of the best albums ever and I think "Slipway Fires" isnt too far short. I guess you either love them or hate them, you either "get" Johnny or you dont......It all starts well with "Wire to Wire" and "Hostage of Love" but then tails off a little before the last four tracks leave you with a (bitter)sweet taste. I love "The House" and find it very moving.I think JB is a star and I hope he keeps fighting away and doesnt get buried by the mixed reviews.
